Who's Afriad of the Dark?: An Advent Retreat

  • The Abbey - The Sabbath Life (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

This guided retreat is intended to provide space to resist the busyness of the holiday season and to pay close attention to how God is at work around us during the seasons of Advent and Christmas.

“The earth was formless and empty, and darkness covered the deep waters. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters. Then God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light” (Genesis 1:2, 3).

The season of Advent is an extraordinary gift of the Church to the world. Advent is much more than a countdown to Christmas. It is a season of acknowledging the darkness all around us and encouraging one another that God’s light is coming.

Advent is for everyone singing Merle Haggard’s “If We Make It Through December” in their loneliest places.

While all the retail stores insist that we purchase one more present and pundits talk about a “War on Christmas,” the darkest night of the year approaches. God is up to something—something so much more meaningful than the busyness of the holiday season.

You are invited to spend a Saturday in the quiet spaces of the Abbey—to listen, to be still, to rest, to be refreshed, to simply be.

We will also be having some guided conversations and lectio divina related to God’s story and the dramatic twist that Advent and Christmas mean to what God is doing in our communities.

Advent is for remembering that everything is going to be okay in the end, and if everything is not okay, then it’s not yet the end.

A catered lunch will be provided.

Cost is $49.

You are welcome to bring a Bible, a journal, and something to write with.

Contemplative practices for a whole-hearted life

This workshop will focus on the practice of Lectio Divina and invite participants to create a Rule of Life.

In a world that feels a little more out of control than the day before, how do we hold onto a sense that everything is going to be okay?

This workshop will introduce a series of opportunities to explore contemplative practices of the Christian faith. In this initial offering, we will explore the practices of Lectio Divina and create a Rule of Life.

Lectio Divina is a way of reading the Bible that invites God to read us as we the pages of Scripture. It's a way of encountering God beyond just learning information.

Writing a Rule of Life is like choosing a route on a road atlas or a GPS. It’s about mindfulness. It’s about intentionality in our days.

A Rule of Life written well invites you deeper into the question: What kind of person is God forming in me right now?

If you're looking for an opportunity to grow deeper with God, this workshop is for you.

A catered lunch is included.

Creating Your Rule of Life

Creating Your Rule of Life

  • The Abbey - The Sabbath Life (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

This workshop will help you write a rule of life so that you can bring clarity and focus to your daily and weekly routines.

Writing a Rule of Life is like choosing a route on a road atlas or a GPS. It’s about mindfulness. It’s about intentionality in our days.

Writing a Rule of Life helps us when the “tyranny of the urgent” colonizes our schedules. A rule helps us by clarifying our “yes’s” and “no’s” before we’re pressed by the onslaught of life and we’re forced into being reactive in our decision making.

A Rule of Life written well invites you deeper into the question: What kind of person is God forming in me right now?

This workshop will include:

  • what is a Rule of Life and what difference having one can make in your life.

  • a basic framework for thinking through different parts of your life you may want to be intentional about.

  • a small group format allowing space for dialogue in sharing what works and what doesn't.

  • ample space and time by yourself for prayer and reflection so that you can create your Rule of Life.

If you're looking for an opportunity to grow deeper with God, this workshop is for you. If you lead others in ministry and spiritual growth, this workshop is for you.

Cost is $79.

A catered lunch is included.
