Visio Divina

Visio divina (translated “divine seeing”) is a practice of praying with a sacred image or work of art.  Through the practice of incorporating art into prayer, we can bring our sense of sight and imagination into our relationship with God, inviting Him to speak to us through what our eyes are taking in.

Below are some steps to walk through this practice.  As you consider the following reflection questions, remember there are no right or wrong answers.  Simply notice what comes up for you during your prayer time, and talk to God about it.

Steps to practice visio divina

  1. Visio: Gaze at the image

Take a few minutes to sit with the image.  Notice what stands out to you.  It could be a character, facial expression, a color, a movement within the piece.  What can you relate to?

  2. Meditatio: Being attentive to God’s word

Is there a Scripture verse or passage that comes up for you as you pray along with the image?  If so, read that passage.  Is there a word, a phrase, or a theme that stands out to you?

  3. Oratio: Praying from the heart

Talk to God about what is being stirred within you as you interact with this image and/or scripture passage.  Is there some way in which He is trying to speak to you

  4. Contemplatio: Resting in God’s presence

Pause in silence, and simply rest with God here, knowing that you are His beloved.

  5. Actio: Asking God how to live out this prayer

Ask God how to put these prayers into action.  How is He calling you to live out what you’ve learned/received during this time of prayer?
