Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you, no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Summary of the Law

Hear what our Lord Jesus Christ says:

Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul. Love him with all your mind. This is the first and most important commandment. And the second is like it. ‘Love your neighbor as you love yourself.’ Everything that is written in the Law and the Prophets is based on these two commandments. (Matthew 22:37–40)

The Lessons

First Reading

A reading from Isaiah 9:2–7:

The people who walked in darkness
    have seen a great light;
those who lived in a land of deep darkness—
    on them light has shined.
You have multiplied exultation;
    you have increased its joy;
they rejoice before you
    as with joy at the harvest,
    as people exult when dividing plunder.
For the yoke of their burden
    and the bar across their shoulders,
    the rod of their oppressor,
    you have broken as on the day of Midian.
For all the boots of the tramping warriors
    and all the garments rolled in blood
    shall be burned as fuel for the fire.
For a child has been born for us,
    a son given to us;
authority rests upon his shoulders,
    and he is named
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
    Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Great will be his authority,
    and there shall be endless peace
for the throne of David and his kingdom.
    He will establish and uphold it
with justice and with righteousness

Second Reading

A reading from Titus 2:11–14:

For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all, training us to renounce impiety and worldly passions and in the present age to live lives that are self-controlled, upright, and godly, while we wait for the blessed hope and the manifestation of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ. He it is who gave himself for us that he might redeem us from all iniquity and purify for himself a people of his own who are zealous for good deeds.

For families who have lost loved ones this year. O Lord, give them courage and hope in their trouble and bring them the joy of your salvation. Have mercy on us for the ways that oppression, racism, discrimination, and inequality persist in society and in our lives. The Confession and Absolution of Sin

Let us humbly confess our sins to Almighty God.

Most merciful God,

we confess that we have sinned against you

in thought, word, and deed,

by what we have done, and by what we have left undone.

We have not loved you with our whole heart;

we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.

We are truly sorry and we humbly repent.

The Comfortable Words

Hear the Word of God to all who truly turn to him.

“Come to me, all you who are tired and are carrying heavy loads. I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28).

“Here is a saying that you can trust. It should be accepted completely. Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners” (1 Timothy 1:15).

The Prayer of Consecration

Holy and gracious Father:

In your infinite love you made us for yourself;

and when we had sinned against you

and become subject to evil and death,

you, in your mercy, sent your only Son Jesus Christ

into the world for our salvation.

By the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary

he became flesh and dwelt among us.

In obedience to your will,

he stretched out his arms upon the Cross

and offered himself once for all,

that by his suffering and death, we might be saved.

By his resurrection, he broke the bonds of death,

trampling Hell and Satan under his feet.

As our great high priest,

he ascended to your right hand in glory,

We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, and we offer you these gifts.

Sanctify them by your Word and the Holy Spirit

to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son Jesus Christ.

Sanctify us also,

that we may worthily receive this holy Sacrament,

and be made one body with him,

that he may dwell in us and we in him.

In the fullness of time,

put all things in subjection under your Christ,

and bring us with all your saints

into the joy of your heavenly kingdom,

where we shall see our Lord face to face.

The Lord’s Prayer

And now as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to pray:

The Blessing and Dismissal

When the song of the angels is stilled,
